Young Athlete Support

goPhysio are delighted to provide support to local young athletes and sports clubs, including Swan Netball Club and Stoneham Football Club.

We also provide additional support to individual athletes, one being Josh. Josh is a discus thrower with his sights set high! We asked Josh a bit more about his specialist sport.

Tell us a little bit more about you and your athletic career to date? 

I started competing in discus in 2016 and found a hidden talent for such an unpopular event early on and In my first competition I threw a distance that got me to top of the UK rankings for my age group.

I have placed first in all competitions in 2018 apart from the European trials and finished the season with titles of Under 17 discus…

I was ranked number 1 in the UK in 2018 for the under 17 age category with a throw of 55.97m. This year I competed at the world schools athletics competition in Croatia for England in the Under 18 age category coming 5th, contributing to the boys England team coming 2nd overall. My personal best this year is 53 metres resulting in me being ranked 4th in the UK and hoping for a lot more by the end of next year.

What does a typical training schedule look like for you? 

Without going into too much detail I’m in the gym doing strength and conditioning about 5x a week. Which includes anything from Olympic lifting (or attempting anyway) to ballistic training to standard weightlifting. My main aim isn’t to build show muscle but go muscle, as i like to put it, so my reps are lower the weights aren’t. I’m also usually down at the track 3-4x a week but currently it’s 2-3 due to the cold however we do indoor throwing sessions to make up for that.

What does coming to goPhysio help you with? 

3 words. Maintenance, prevention and restoration. You can think of going to goPhysio almost like going to a car garage. You are a car and garage is there to tighten any loose screws, refill your tires and most importantly prevent the chance breakdown on the road!

I’m going to have and do have injuries, weaknesses, the whole lot but I know I would have fared a whole lot worse if it wasn’t for the help goPhysio have provided me. My assigned Therapist, Rosie, is helping me with old injuries but also preventing any from creeping up on me further down the line and I can’t exactly exactly ask for more than that.

My event, uncommon though it is, requires an immense amount of co-ordination and power. All throwers have to produce the most efficient movements as fast as possible and because of this any weak link or flaw can be the difference of metres at a young age or the crucial centimetres at their prime. goPhysio helps me identify that weak link, that limiter so that I can achieve my potential and hopefully repay the incredible support network they’ve offered me by doing just that.

Why did you choose to get help at goPhysio? 

Convenience and reputation. Not only is goPhysio basically down the road they are also one of the most suggested from those I’ve know do have had issues and needed somewhere to go. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere isn’t one of dread (ing of what’s coming) but relief that it will be okay. Before i gained support from goPhysio Iā€™d been there previously for a knee injury that costed me losing out on going to nationals but with their help I was able to get back to doing what I love quicker then i thought i would and you can’t really ask for more than that.

What are your plans for the future? 

In terms of where I want to take my sport, my only answer really is as far as I possibly can. I’m an Olympic and Commonwealth hopeful, just like any other athlete who loves their sport, my current aims are Paris Olympics 2024 and the Commonwealth Games of 2022. I plan to throw at least 58 metres this year to qualify for the Under 20 world championships in Nairobi and finish top 3 in the UK. That’s the plan anyway and with the support from goPhysio my dreams are ever closer to becoming a reality.



Train for the slopes

Skiing and snowboarding are a fantastic form of exercise, challenging both our muscles and our cardio vascular system in an extremely enjoyable way. Both require a significant amount of strength and endurance to stay on the slopes for the duration of holiday.Ā  Unfortunately, most of us have not prepared enough in advance to meet the demands of what is required.

Most of the injuries we see in the clinic throughout the year are not as a result of a sudden traumatic injury, like a big fall leading to a broken bone.Ā Instead, the most common injuries are a result of an imbalance between the loads/stresses we put through our body versus their ability to tolerate that load.Ā  The level of tolerance we have is variable and is constantly changing in adaption to our current activity levels.Ā  For example, a marathon runner training to do a marathon can gradually adapt to slowly building their weekly mileage over the training program so that they can tolerate the full 26.2 miles.Ā  If they then donā€™t run for a few months they wouldnā€™t be able to run another marathon again without have to train again as their level of tolerance would slowly ebb away leaving them prone to an injury.

Exactly the same applies to skiing and boarding injuries.Ā 

Now unfortunately, the UK doesnā€™t have many mountains to get some regular practice on!Ā Ā This means that skiing/snowboarding tends to be something we donā€™t do all year then suddenly we go away and are on the mountain for 5 hours or so for 6 days a week straight.Ā  That is a dramatic and sudden change in the load and demands we put through our body.Ā  This increase in demand can cause the tissues to become sensitive and painful.Ā  This then causes them to lose tolerance (their ability to cope) Ā and can mean that everyday activities can start to aggravate them further (more commonly known as an overuse injury).Ā Such injuries then tend to become a vicious cycle of pain, rest, recover, startĀ exercisingĀ again, pain, rest………a cycle that needs to be broken to avoid you having to limit what you do and have a life impacted by recurrent pain.

The good news is, you can do a lot to prevent getting such an injury on the slopes.Ā 

Whilst it is difficult to practice skiing/snowboarding in advance of going (there are indoor slopes and dry skiing slopes around, which we encourage you to visit in advance to get used to the demands) you can still take measures to reduce the risks of such overuse injuries.Ā By training your body in another way, we can help give it the ability to deal with the demands that we are likely to put through it over the course of the holiday.Ā 

Over the course of a week, just imagine what physical demands are placed on your body during such a physical task such as skiing or snowboarding?!

To prepare for this, you can increase your body’s ability to cope with those increased demands by strengthening and conditioning your body, which will increase it’s tolerance levels.Ā The best way of doing this is through doing specific strengthening exercises.Ā  Whilst bodyweight exercises are a good start, the ideal method would be through resistance training using weights or resistance machines.

However, the weights area of a gym can be a daunting place if you’ve never used weights before, and even if you have, what are the best exercises to do? What muscles or areas should you target for skiing or boarding? How many repetitions? How many sets? It can all be very confusing!

  1. Your first session will be a 1-2-1 Snow Start Up Session. In this practical 1 hour session, Physio Chris will find out more about you and your skiing or boarding level, any injuries or concerns, your fitness and holiday plans. From this he will create a bespoke, guided exercise programme for you to do at goPhysio over the following weeks. This session will be led by Physio Chris, who has previously worked with British ParaSnowSport, bringing his experience into selecting the most suitable exercises to getting you ready for the slopes.
  2. 5 x 1 hour Practical Sessions During each of your 5 following 1 hour practical sessions, you will work on your program alongside 2 other attendees, in our fully equipped Strong Room. This will be under the guidance and supervision of one of our Sports & Rehabilitation Therapists, who will be on hand to adjust your exercises, add new challenges and monitor your progress. You can do 1 session a week or 2 sessions a week – we can be flexible to accommodate your timings!
  3. Review Once you’ve come to the end of your 5 sessions, Physio Chris will carry out a review of your progress, and support you with your goals from there!
