In the light of the uncertainty, ongoing changes and turbulent times we are living with. We are committed to helping as many people as possible benefit from Pilates, so have a range of ways for you to take part in Pilates.

Pilates is such a popular form of exercise and activity. For some, it’s such an important part of life, helping maintain mobility, freedom of movement, flexibility, and warding off injuries, aches and pains.

We are delighted to have now launched a full timetable of live Online Pilates classes. This means you can enjoy the benefits of Pilates from the comfort of your home, perfect if: you want to do a regular, live Pilates class but don’t feel confident coming into the studio.

Unlimited access to the full online timetable is £29/month. You can enjoy as many classes a week as you like! Alternatively, you can choose to pay £5 per class on a PAYG basis.

The online classes also offer another option if you are one of our face to face Pilates mat or Reformer members, but can’t make your regular class as you are having to isolate, look after a child home from school, can’t get into the studio, aren’t feeling up to coming to the studio (or any other reason!). As part of your studio class membership, you will now get unlimited free access to all the online classes.

How does it work?

  1. Visit our online class management system and sign up here.
  2. Purchase your membership, either a Single Online Pilates Class or Unlimited Virtual Pilates Classes. Take a look at the membership options and purchase here. If you already have an active F2F membership, access to online classes is now included in your membership.
  3. Take a look at the timetable and book your place in the class or classes you’d like to join.
  4. You’ll need to have access to a device and have Zoom installed.
  5. Have a read here of our top tips of how to get the most of online sessions.

The new online classes are part of our new ‘Hybrid’ model of Pilates, where we are live streaming our face to face studio classes. During the live stream, there will be some interaction with the people in the studio class. Those joining us at home will not have 1-2-1 guidance or interaction, but as an integral part of the class you will have full instructions, prompts and guidance throughout.

What level class should I do?

We offer 3 levels of mat based Pilates classes, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. This follows the APPI training concept, which all of our Instructors have completed.

Now there is access to so many online classes, with less in person and face to face support, it is even more important that people are advised what level of classes to take part in.

At goPhysio, if you’ve been attending any of our Pilates classes for a while, we keep an eye on you and will suggest when we think is the right time for you to try and progress up a level. Without that guidance, Physio & Pilates Instructor, Roz, has put in place fantastic guide to help you identify what you.

Thinking of Starting Pilates?

The new year always gets people thinking about or talking about starting something new. It can be a great time to give a boost to your health and wellbeing.

Pilates is a great form of exercise, so many people are recommended to do it by friends, family, their GP or surgeon. But many people don’t actually know what it is or what it will entail and that can put them off.

Starting any new form of exercise can seem daunting at first, many us worry about looking silly in front of a class or not knowing what to do, what to expect or even what to wear!

But fear not!! Everyone started somewhere, and although many of our classes have formed close friendships, they can too remember what it was like to start out!

This is one of the reasons we always offer everyone new to Pilates a free 30 minute induction session. This allows you to talk through any health or injury concerns with one of our Clinical Pilates Instructors and help you find out more about Pilates. The Instructor will modify any exercises to suit your individual needs and guide you towards a suitable level class for you.

You’ll also learn the basics of what pilates is: finding your postural muscles and learning some of the common beginner exercises to get you up to speed before entering a class.

You’ll have the chance to ask questions about anything else you’re concerned about so you can start your first class in confidence.

Your first class

The first class can be as much as a mental workout as a physical one whilst you get used to controlling your breathing whilst using new muscles in a new way. However, no one expects you to be perfect straight away so don’t panic – the Instructor leading the class will make sure you’re exercising safely and at the correct level, as long as you are still breathing that’s a good enough start for the first few weeks so don’t worry if you can’t co-ordinate everything straight away!

As with learning any new skill it takes time. Remember that pilates is non-competitive so you will work at your own level during each class. We’ll progress your exercises gradually and encourage you to move up to intermediate and advanced level classes when you’re ready.

It can take 6-8weeks to build muscle, and much longer if you’ve had pain or weakness in an area for a long time so whilst we can’t expect an overnight body transformation, you will notice the difference if you stick with it. Our regular pilates attendees report increased flexibility, reduced pain, improved balance, improved muscle tone and strength, better posture and improved confidence to exercise as just a few of the benefits of our classes!

Top 3 Pilates Standing Exercises

This month, Physio and Pilates Instructor, Chris, has chosen his top 3 Pilates exercises you can do in standing.

Our mat based classes (as the name suggests!), involve a range of mat exercises in sitting, lying on your back or side. However, Pilates exercises done in standing are very important too. Doing these exercises will engage and work different sets of muscles.

#1 Arm Openings Level 1

  1. Start in a natural standing position.
  2. Lift your arms forwards to shoulder height, shoulder width apart, palms facing inwards.
  3. Level 1:
    • Inhale, rotate the thoracic spine, head and neck to the right, keeping the pelvis still. Let your right arm follow the movement of the spine while reaching forwards with your left arm.
    • Exhale, rotate your body back to the midline, allowing your arm to follow the movement to resume the starting position.
    • Repeat up to ten times alternating sides.

#2 Foot Series

  1.  Starting position in a natural standing position. Centre engaged.
  2. Inhale to prepare.
  3. Exhale, bend your hips and knees 45 degrees.
  4. Inhale, peel the heels off the floor, keeping the hips and knees bent.
  5. Exhale, straighten your hips and knees, keeping the heels lifted.
  6. Inhale, lower the heels to return to the starting position.
  7. Repeat up to ten times and then reverse the direction of movement.
  8. Watch points:
    • Keep your back in a neutral position, so don’t bend forwards or backwards from the spine.
    • Aim to rise and lower largely on the vertical plane only. No shifting of the center of gravity.
    • Try and keep your big toe on the floor.
    • Control the lowering phase slowly.
    • Avoid locking your knees.

#3 Side Leg Lift Level 1

  1. Starting position – Right lunge. Left leg extended to the side, with the tip of the big toe resting on the floor. Trunk hinged forwards from the hips at around 45 degrees. Hands on waist. Centre engaged.
  2. Inhale to prepare.
  3. Exhale, reach your left toes away and then lift your left leg horizontally up from the hip, keeping the pelvis stable. Hold.
  4. Inhale, reach and lower the leg to the floor.
  5. Repeat up to ten times and then repeat on the opposite side.

Bringing Pilates Into Everyday Life

Pilates is a great form of low impact exercise to help strengthen your core muscles, improve your posture and help to keep you flexible and mobile. Whilst doing a class once a week is a great start, you can bring some of the key elements of Pilates into your daily life to get even more benefit from Pilates.

Here are five ways you can bring Pilates into your everyday life:

#1 Engage your core

This isn’t just for Pilates classes! Keeping your core gently engaged through the day when you are moving around is a great way to further strengthen your core. Practice makes perfect! Try engaging your core before you get out of bed in the morning, before climbing a flight of stairs or before bending down to reach into a cupboard. #2 Move correctly

Pilates classes involve a series of slow, well controlled movements. Take this principle and apply it to all your movements, thinking about moving in a more purposeful and controlled manner, rather than rushing from A to B with no thought! Avoid any sudden or jerky movements and aim for smooth stable movements. Think quality of movement from the cues you might have picked up in your classes.

#3 Be Mindful of Your Posture

Imagine you have a helium balloon attached to the top of your head, pulling your spine up tall to stop you slouching. Think about sliding your shoulder blades back and down into your back pockets to open your chest and keep your upper back strong. Tuck your chin in slightly and keep the back of your neck long. If you work in an office and spend a lot of time sitting or in 1 position for long periods of time, you can start to feel the effects – by keeping these principles in mind you’ll be more productive and feel less achy at the end of the day! 

#4 Keep breathing

Try bringing some Pilates style breathing into your day – place your hands on your ribs and take a deep breath in, filling and expanding your lungs all the way to the base. Hold the breath for a moment and then exhale, pushing all the air out your lungs. Repeat 3-5 times. This is a great way to bring some calm or clarity to a busy day!

#5 Stretch it out

Start or finish your day with some basic Pilates stretches to get your body warmed up for the day ahead or cooled down after a long day. Try a ‘Cat Stretch’ on all fours to get your spine moving and then take it into a ‘Thread the Needle’ to get some rotational movement. Use a ‘Childs Pose’ or ‘Shell Stretch’ to relax and unwind at the end of the day.

Why Pilates is great for runners

Pilates is an effective, mainly mat based, body-conditioning routine designed to increase physical endurance, flexibility, posture, co-ordination, and core strength. It involves focused, controlled movements that can be modified to create different levels of difficulty.

Pilates was developed by a German, Joseph Pilates, in the early 1900’s as a form of exercise for soldiers recovering from injuries in WW1. He then adapted it for use by gymnasts and dancers. This form of Pilates is known as ‘traditional’. There are a host of other types of Pilates too, including Reformer Pilates, which utilises equipment and resistance techniques.

At goPhysio, we teach the APPI method, which is a form of clinical Pilates. The APPI Method is a research based, clinical application of improving the way a person moves and functions in their everyday life. The traditional Pilates exercises have been broken down into clearly defined levels to ensure a standard, gradual progression towards normal, functional movement. This also helps to build a strong foundation to build and progress your core strength on. The core cylinder, the focus of all Pilates movements, consists of the four abdominal groups (external oblique, internal oblique, rectus abdominis, transversus abdominis), the three lower back groups (psoas major, quadratus lumborum, spinalis) as well as the muscles of the buttocks, hips and pelvis.

The core

The ‘core’ plays a key part for any sport – in running, the main purpose is to stabilise and support the spine and trunk, providing a strong centre for the transfer of forces. It helps to make the dynamic leg movements as efficient as possible. Strong core muscles also help to maintain good posture to maximise performance and minimise injury. Reduced core stability can cause excess movement in the trunk, through over rotation. This can lead to a poor running form, which in turn leads to increased fatigue and reduced performance potential. This is due to energy being wasted in the form of excess movement and poor control.

Pilates also has many other benefits for runners

  • Helps to identify any weaknesses that inhibit your running technique. It will provide you with muscular cues to help you fire and strengthen muscles that help you maintain a better running posture, which in turn will reduce the risk of injury and overuse.
  • A strong, balanced body helps you maintain proper form as you fatigue. Pilates helps you loosen your hips, legs and back, all helping you keep a fluid, long stride.
  • Pilates can decrease your recovery time after injury or a strenuous workout by increasing joint mobility, improving flexibility and body awareness.
  • Pilates breathing encourages you to use the diaphragm and control your inhalation/exhalations to assist with movement – this translates into better control during running.
  • Pilates helps to improve hip, pelvic and lumbar spine mobility & flexibility, through the movements and stretches.

We run over 20 classes a week at the clinic and even though they are aren’t targeted specifically at runners, it would be a great addition to your training regime to help with core strength, balance and improved mobility & flexibility.

All About 1-2-1 Pilates

A 1-2-1 Pilates session is a 30 minute appointment with one of our Clinical Pilates Instructors. Doing a 1-2-1 is commonplace before starting any specialist Clinical Pilates class. Why is this necessary you may ask? There are a number of reasons:

  • To realise and experience the true benefits of Pilates, learning and practicing the right technique is crucial. The movements are very subtle. Having a 1-2-1 enables us to teach you the basics, so that when you’re in a class environment you get the best out of Pilates.
  • We can find out what you want to gain from Pilates and make sure we guide you into the most appropriate class and level to help you achieve your goals.
  • We will find out about any old or existing injuries, niggles or conditions that may need addressing. his is where our clinical expertise comes in – having small classes that are taught by clinical specialists (Physiotherapists or Sports & Rehabilitation Therapists) enables us to support you as an individual.
  • We will teach you some of the basic terms, names of exercises and make sure you are confident with the building block of Pilates – centering. This means when you start the classes, you are more confident and comfortable with what you are doing.
  • We can show you the studio and talk through the class booking process, making it all more familiar and easy for you to join a class.
  • It’s a chance for you to ask any questions you may have about Pilates, discuss any individual worries or concerns and help make sure you are confident with any Pilates decisions you may be making!

Absolute Beginners Pilates goPhysioHave you heard all about the benefits of Pilates but have no idea what it is or what a class entails? Are you not sure where to start? Are you keen to join a class but feel a bit daunted by it?

We’re bringing a special class to Chandlers Ford this Summer – Absolute Beginners Pilates

This special Summer Pilates class, forms part of our summer timetable. This 1 hour session is for absolute beginners to Pilates. If you’re not sure what Pilates is, what a class would involve or whether it’s for you, now’s your chance to give it a try! It will cover all the Pilates basics, help you understand more about Pilates and give you the opportunity to practice some exercises. All of this will be under the careful guidance of one of our experienced Pilates Instructors.

The classes are small and supportive, so you’ll get individual guidance and attention. Our studio is welcoming and friendly, we make the classes fun and sociable – it’s so important you enjoy exercise! You can work and develop at your own pace, so don’t worry about feeling pressure or that it’s too challenging!

Absolute beginner classes are being held on:

  • Tuesday 7th August at 10am with Chris
  •  Thursday 30th August 9.30am with Roz

The 1 hour class costs £12.50. Pre-booking is required.
